Knee pain can come from arthritis, tendon or soft-tissue problems, or even from the spine or hip. At Motionis Medicine in Downtown Brooklyn, Dr. Tanuj Palvia, MD first works out what is causing your knee pain, then discusses non-surgical options that may include ultrasound-guided injections or regenerative treatments such as PRP.

Start with the cause

Treatment follows the diagnosis, not the other way around. A knee evaluation may include a history of when pain started and what worsens it, a physical examination, a functional assessment, and review of any X-ray or MRI. Imaging findings alone do not always explain symptoms, so they are interpreted together with your examination. Learn more about knee pain and knee arthritis.

Injection and non-surgical options that may be discussed

Which option fits you depends on your diagnosis, how advanced the problem is and your goals. Not every patient is a candidate for every treatment.

What the research says, and what it does not

PRP for knee osteoarthritis is an active area of research. A 2023 systematic review in Cureus describes it as a promising non-invasive option while noting that questions remain about the best preparation and dose (read the review). Results vary from person to person, and no treatment can be guaranteed to work. Insurance often does not cover PRP; see insurance and costs.

Next step

If knee pain is limiting your movement, a physician-led evaluation can clarify your options. See what to expect at your first visit or call the office to schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an MRI before seeing Dr. Palvia?

Not necessarily. Bring any prior imaging reports you already have. Dr. Palvia decides during the evaluation whether more testing is needed.

Will a knee injection fix my pain permanently?

No treatment can be guaranteed. Injections may reduce pain for a period of time and are usually one part of a broader plan that can include rehabilitation.
